Portuguese cuisine is rich and varied; and Oporto, this ancient and emblematic Portuguese city, is the birthplace of many of the country´s best dishes. Portuense style tripe is the most typical and traditional dish, dating back to the 15th century, when the conquistador expedition to Ceuta took all the city´s meat with it, leaving only offal. Eating out in Portuense restaurant, in the city of bridges, is a real treat for the palate.
Portuense tripe is one Oporto´s traditional dishes, as is cod, cooked in many different forms; and a special meat, cheese and sauce stuffed sandwich called "francesita". Broths are also typical in this region, and as in the rest of Portuagal, fish and seafood are very popular. As for drinking, nothing can beat a good Port wine.
Oporto is a cosmopolitan city, which means that you will find many other types of cuisine. In Oporto there are French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese restaurants, as well as African restaurants and South American barbeque places.
